404 Resolver

Every day turns the 404 hits of search and AI crawlers into 410 Gone or 301 redirects in Redirection. Starts in report-only mode.

Description

Search engines and AI crawlers keep requesting URLs of deleted posts, tags and authors. 404 Resolver reads the 404 log of the Redirection plugin once a day, keeps only hits of known bots (Googlebot, bingbot, GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot and others — editable) and decides for every content-like URL:

  • 301 to the live post, page, tag, category or author with the same slug;
  • 410 Gone when nothing with that slug exists any more;
  • needs review when a post with that slug is a draft, scheduled, private or in the trash — nothing is changed automatically.

It also heals itself: an old 410 rule is switched off when the content comes back.

  • Report-only mode by default: every run is logged with the full list of decisions; turn auto-apply on when you trust the results.
  • Rules are added to Redirection (group 1) with «ignore trailing slash», never duplicated.
  • Run history and details on the plugin page under «MCG Plugins → 404 Resolver».
  • Works with any permalink structure: tag, category and author bases are read from the site settings; a live counterpart is searched among all public post types (posts, pages, WooCommerce products…).
  • «Site sections» setting: handle only URLs that start with the listed sections (plus dates, tags, categories, authors); empty — every path of up to 4 segments.

Requires the Redirection plugin with 404 logging enabled.

Changelog

1.4.1 (2026-10-15)

  • The «MCG Plugins» menu is now at the top of the admin menu, right under the Dashboard.

1.4.0 (2026-10-15)

  • Fake bots are filtered out: with SearchPulse active and Redirection storing full IP addresses, every 404 request is checked against the official IP ranges of Google, Bing and AI bots; URLs requested only by fake «Googlebots» (vulnerability scanners) no longer create 410 / 301 rules. The dashboard shows the check mode and how many URLs were skipped.

1.3.1 (2026-10-15)

  • Technical post types of page builders and themes (Elementor templates and floating buttons, Penci and 8theme blocks, WordPress block templates) are no longer used as redirect targets. The option k404r_post_types sets the list for a site; the filter k404r_excluded_post_types changes the exclusions.
Older versions (4)

1.3.0 (2026-10-15)

  • Universal logic (merged from the m-wood.com.ua branch): any permalink structure, tag/category/author bases from the site settings, all public post types (WooCommerce products too), first Redirection group detected automatically.
  • New setting «Site sections to handle» (first URL segment); empty — every path of up to 4 segments.
  • Notice on the plugin page when the Redirection 404 log is missing.
  • The k404r_positive_regex option and filter of 1.2.0 are replaced by the «Site sections» setting and the k404r_is_content_path filter.

1.2.0 (2026-10-15)

  • Published as a MEDIA CONTENT GROUP plugin (formerly «Keddr 404 Resolver»): updates through MCG Hub, page in the shared «MCG Plugins» menu at the same address.
  • English interface with a full Ukrainian translation.
  • URL shapes treated as content can be changed per site (option or filter k404r_positive_regex); the default is unchanged.
  • Declares the dependency on Redirection.
  • Settings, run history and the daily schedule of the former plugin are kept.

1.1.0

  • Self-healing: switches off a 410 rule when the content comes back. Tag, category and author URLs are checked against terms and users.

1.0.0

  • First version.
